This paper presents an overview of female circumcision in Africa. Specifically, it examines the various types of female circumcision, its geographic distribution, the practitioners, the health implications, the reasons given by African societies to justify the operations, and the various national and international efforts to deal with and draw attention to the practice of female circumcision.
